Alex & Eliza: A Love Story Book Review

After briefly reviewing some of my favorite novels & coffee table books back in August, I got a lot of really great feedback from y'all (Click here to read my Bookshelf Insight Post). I recently finished the novel, Alex & Eliza: A Love Story & thought I would share some of my thoughts on it with y'all.

About the Book:

Alex & Eliza: A Love Story is essentially a loose interpretation of Alexander Hamilton & Eliza Schuyler's love story. It is set over the course of a few years during the American Revolution. The #1 New York Times Best Selling Author, Melissa de la Cruz, said the Broadway musical, Hamilton, was her main inspiration.

My Thoughts:

I have to say, this was truly a great book. I am not typically the type to crave reading, but when I find a good read, it's hard for me to put it down. Alex & Eliza: A Love Story was the perfect combination of a romance story mixed with legitamate historical background.

For being as interested in history as I am, I loved the way Cruz was able to tie in all of the very real events at the time. Now, I will say, I thought the first fifty pages or so were a little slow. However, this is simply because this is where Cruz provides a bulk of the information on what was going on in the revolution at the time, which is very important throughout the remainder of the novel. At the same time, the novel was not a long, boring textbook.

I must admit, I am a sucker for those bubblegum romance novels. I like being able to just read & enjoy a light-hearted love story. While Alex & Eliza: A Love Story was that whimsical romance story, the historical foundation, as I mentioned, really helped back it up.

Now, I am sure many of you are wondering what the relation of the novel is to the musical, Hamilton. For any of you who may be planning to go see the musical, I certainly do recommend reading some form of book, novel, or biography, just so you have a bit of knowledge going into the show.

As I said, I really enjoyed this particular novel, but I also founded myself really intrigued by the couple's love story & how it would end. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, but I will say I was a bit disappointed after seeing the musical just because the love story that I got so hooked on in the novel, was not quite the same as the one portrayed in Hamilton.

Perhaps the second Alex & Eliza book (Love & War: An Alex & Eliza Story) that is coming out this April, will explain a few of the events of their relationship that Hamilton showed. I look forward to reading the next book!
