16 Years of Winnie
Hello Hello! Today is July 5, 2018, AKA my sixteenth birthday!! I wanted to reintroduce myself to y'all and welcome some new followers by sharing 16 random facts about me and my 16 years of 1ife. Let's begin!
I was actually born in New Orleans, Louisana however, I have been raised here in Houston, Texas. Although the only reason we lived in New Orleans at the time was that my dad was in medical school at Tulane Hospital (the same place I was born), my maternal grandmother's whole family is also from South Louisiana.
Lots O Siblings
Although I only have one full blood sibling (my little brother Will). I have four stepsiblings and 3 half-siblings, however, we are all very close so I consider us all equal. In fact, my older sister, Sarah, and I helped set up our parents. It's pretty cool how my best friend is now my sister.
A Crazy Blend of the World
With both of my parents being from all parts of the world that makes me, a crazy blend of it all. My paternal grandma was born and raised in Cuba and my paternal grandpa was born and raised in Scotland. On my mama's side, we are a mix of Irish, French, Cajun and East Texan. My maternal grandmother was born in New Orleans and her parents are from the towns of Bunkie and Lottie, Louisiana. Meanwhile, my maternal granddad was born and raised in East Texas. Did you get that? Lol. All in all, that means I am 25% Scottish, 25% Cuban, and 50% Irish, Cajun, French, East Texan and whatever else may be in there.
Purple is My Love
If you haven't picked up on it yet, I LOVE purple. When I say this, I mean everything I own is purple: my bedroom walls, my camp trunk, a large majority of my closet, my backpack, 2 of my purses, my bedspread, my curtains, my charge cord, my scarves, my hats, I even have 15 pairs of just purple shoes. I honestly get it from my grandmother. In fact, 2 years ago my grandmother and I dyed parts of our dark brown hair purple and even though I had to cut mine for school, Grandmother's is still there and looking FABULOUS.
Sweets & A Sweet Tooth
Ever since I was a little one, I have always loved sweets. I remember so clearly sitting at my grandmother's kitchen counter watching her bake her infamous chocolate birthday cakes as I would lick the chocolate covered spatula. Since then, I have not only further enjoyed munching on brownies, cookies, cakes, and other ooey-gooey sweets, but I have also begun to really enjoy baking them!
Sewing & Creating
Another passion of mine that I have acquired from my grandmother is my loving for sewing and utilizing my creativity. I love creating clothes and accessories using my sewing machine. I have also always had a passion for painting. It's so amazing what our hands can create!
I am Winnie II
My name is Winnie. It's not short for Winifred or anything else, it's just Winnie. However, the name Winnie does not start with me. I am named after my maternal great-grandmother, Winnie Andrews O'Brien. The ladies throughout my family are pretty wonderful people that I do aspire to be like someday. It's pretty cool that I get to be named after one of them.
I Heart Fashion
Fashion has ALWAYS been a passion of mine. My mom still talks about how picky I was about what I wore as a two-year-old. Hence why I created this creative space, TheWinDog. I believe the term fashion relates to so much more than just the clothes you see modeled down the runway during fashion week. Fashion is art, it's history, it's a story, and it's people wearing their lives and emotions for all to see. I hope someday I can apply my love for clothes, accessories, textiles, and the stories behind them to my full-time career.
The People Shows
Long before it was popular to binge watch various YouTubers' vlogs and other videos, Sarah and I created The People Shows. The idea actually sparked from watching an episode of iCarly (only the really OG's can relate) and Sarah recently receiving a digital camera for Christmas. From there we made these hilarious videos of us performing skits, dancing, and singing. These videos certainly have evolved over the years for the better.
Scotland is one place I am aching to visit. When I was 18 months old, I went to Ackergill with my family, but wow, I would love to go back someday and I do hope I get to. From pictures I've seen and stories I have heard, it seems like a crazy cool magical place.
I am a HUGE fan of George Strait and always have been. My mom made a CD when I was little of one of his concerts here in Houston at the Astrodome. I used to request to listen to it as we drove to my Pre-School. I knew every single word of every single song on that CD. When we used to drive through San Antonio on road trips, I would request to stop by Mr. Strait's house to just "say hi". Y'all I am not kidding when I tell you I love George Strait so much. Oh, and of course, my favorite song is Baby's Gotten Good at Goodbye, however, I have always referred to it as Rotten Day.
Along with George Strait, I have a totally random taste in music. It's a total mix of 70's, 80's, and 90's with classic country. Some of my favorites included: Counting Crows, Dave Matthews, Pearl Jam, Kenny Chesney, Matchbox Twenty, Billy Joel, U2, Tracey Chapman, Bruce Springsteen, and of course, George Strait. If my totally random mix of music intrigues you in the slightest, I suggest checking out my Spotify playlists: More Sweet Than Bitter, Lonesome Dove & Yellow Rose, Please Stand Up, and Stay Golden.
In Schoool, my FAVORITE subjects are Biology (more specifically Anatomy) and History (this year I took World History II and we learned about the French Revolution to present and I LOVED it). I'm not sure what it is, but I simply find these two classes just fascinating.
Not only do I have a rather large immediate family, but I also have a pretty good sized extended family (on my mama's side) and they all live in Houston now! It is amazing how we are all so close, yet we can easily not see each other for a while. This is why we started doing weekly family dinners. Every Sunday night, one of the families will host dinner. It's a totally laid-back casual affair, but it is something I look forward to every week. Reconnecting with family over good food is a wonderful way to wrap up your weekend and kickstart the next week.
The only dogs I have ever had are poodles. The poodle trend started when my mom got out of college and got Sadie, a black toy poodle. My mom is allergic to most dogs so a poodle worked out well. I'm not going to lie, as Sadie got older she got kinda crazy but we all loved her for that and she lived a good long 16 years. When I was in 1st grade, we got Moses, a black standard poodle. Moses was actually a show dog when he was a puppy. He literally went on tour for a few months! And almost two years ago we got our puppy Pearl, a white standard poodle. Oh boy, she is a hot mess!
Flip Flops Forever
I have always been a flip-flop kinda gal. I guess you could say it's becuase I'm a summer baby. Since I was 2 years old, I have been a strong flip-slop supporter, ESPECIALLY in the summer time. Unless I am working out, I only leave my house with my feet in a pair of flip-flops or nothing at all.
